The Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO's) encourage pupils and parents to leave their cars at home whenever possible, and to use public transport, walk, cycle or to scoot to school in order to promote sustainable travel.
In order to be considered for the role of a JRSO, pupils are asked to write a letter explaining why they would be a suitable candidate for this role. JRSO's have regular meetings to generate ideas to promote the school travel plan amongst the pupils, and also have the opportunity to discuss Sustainable Travel options with pupils form other schools. JRSO's visit the London Transport Museum with other schools to see how transport in and around London has developed and changed over the years and some have even been invited to visit the Romford Town Hall in order to present their ideas on Sustainable Travel.
Our school has been awarded a gold Tfl STARS award for the past three years! The TfL STARS accreditation scheme inspires young Londoners to think differently about travel and its impact on their health, wellbeing and the environment. Each year STARS schools replace 13 million miles’ worth of car journeys with walking, cycling and scooting! Our JRSO's contribute greatly to the work that is done to ensure that the school attains this gold award each year. As the only Infant School to have been selected to have Junior Road Safety Officers in the London Borough of Havering, we value the contributions that these pupils make to developing an awareness of the impact that our use of transport has on the environment.
